Creating clarity & trust in crypto checkout experience

Creating clarity & trust in crypto checkout experience

Overview

Nume Crypto set out to redesign the crypto checkout experience to help customers pay with confidence.

The goal was to make the process transparent and intuitive, helping users complete purchases easily while building trust in a new, emerging payment method.

My Role

I led the end-to-end design of Nume’s crypto checkout experience.
I analyzed competitor flows to uncover pain points and created a clear, transparent, and user-friendly solution that encouraged users to complete payments.

Impact

In Feb 2023, customers completed purchases via NumePay at a conference through five local business partnerships. Insights from the event guided a pivot toward better product-market fit.

Problem

Customers can't tell what crypto are accepted, creating confusion & friction during checkout

Similar to stores that choose to accept select credit cards, businesses can also choose which crypto they want to accept.

During our competitive analysis of Coinbase, BitPay and Coinpayments, we noticed how ambiguous the payment selection screen is:

"What crypto does this store accept?"

"Do I have the right crypto accepted by the store?"

"Do I need to load more funds into my account to pay?"

Our v0 was created based on our competitors, but we saw opportunities to improve the experience for customers.

Goal

Clarify which crypto customers can pay with to build trust and reduce confusion

For each crypto in a customer's wallet, classify them as:

Available for payment

Accepted & sufficient funds

Accepted & sufficient funds

Accepted & sufficient funds

More funds needed

Accepted, but insufficient funds

Not accepted

By communicating this information to customers, it makes it faster for them to decide how they’d like to pay, eliminating the uncertainty that often arises when using a new experience. The overall goal is to make purchases with crypto to feel as seamless as traditional methods and this begins with building trust with users.

Select NumePay & sign into wallet

NumePay would be listed as a payment option like Visa, Mastercard, etc. Then, you sign into your wallet with your crypto funds.

Select a crypto to pay with

After login, users can see all those funds and choose which to pay which based on what the store accepts.

Cryptos unable to be selected are labeled with more context. We wanted to show users these cryptos to reassure them they’re in their wallet, they just can’t be used for purchase.

Confirm payment

Before confirming payment, users are shown the new balance of the cryptocurrency once purchase is complete.

Impact

Customers paid with NumePay in 2023

Customers paid with crypto at a web3 conference where Nume conducted a closed alpha launch with five local businesses.

The desktop design laid the foundation for the mobile app experience, advancing the company closer to product market fit. While results are proprietary, this milestone demonstrated the demand for a transparent, user-friendly crypto checkout experience.
